Russell Barwick: Well, what an extraordinary effort there from Scotland. Matt Burke, what did you think?

MB: Yes, indeed Russ, a marvelous statement of intent there by the plucky Scots, there was some excellent defence and when they got the ball in hand they really looked like they might score.

RB: Do you agree Gordon?

Gordon Bray: Absolutely Russ, the Scots really tried hard to break the gain line and give the opposition something to think hard about. A couple of mistakes gave away some three-pointers and a few hiccups in the blitz defensive strategy resulted in a try or two but, apart from those scores by the opposition, they might have won.

MB: Yes, it’s a shame that they let in those tries and gave away the penalties because that was the difference between winning and losing this match. Scotland looked so close to scoring for some of the game, they just lacked that clinical finishing touch.

GB: Yep, a stronger Scottish attack at the breakdown and better defence when the opposition had the ball would have seen them win this game.

MB: Yes, good old plucky Scotland.

GB: Correct; Scotland the Brave, almost. (wry smile at his own genius)

RB: Scotland can take a lot from this performance ready for their next match in the competition, can’t they?

MB: Yes, Scotland will have a lot of positives from this match.

RB: So, there you have it; Scotland’s Six Nations is underway after losing 18-38 to……
